The Early Piano
This two-part program is intended to aid the student to discover the beauty and aesthetic possibilties of the pre-modern piano.
It will survey the key movements in piano building from Cristofori through Erard.
It will discuss the importance and meaning of period performance, comparing piano literature on a representative early, and then modern, piano.
By means of actual pianos on site, audio and video tapes, an opportunity is provided to experience the early piano.
It will survey the current fortepiano building and replica movement, as well as current period performance trends. .
It will provide insight into the actual pianos and actions, by means of onsite display of these instruments and/or their actions.
The first part of this program - “The Early Piano from Cristofori through the Classical Period,” was given to the Pomona Valley Chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild on April 14, 2003. See “Events, Open House Dates” for more information.
