Loan from the William Shull Collection, and currently being given a restorative conservation, nearly complete. This piano was used for decades by a large school district near Los Angeles, and came to us with a 1960 rebuild, which repaired the pinblock, soundboard, and replaced the hammers. Since then abusive cabinet repairs were made by the school district maintenance department. We have retained most original action parts and original pinblock and soundboard, with the least amount of invasive repairs. We have kept the original key leading, which, at first glance, seems excessive, but actually reflects a design which was functional based on the original action ratios and hammer weights. Therefore we have replaced the existing heavy, replacement hammers by having a new set made to specifications we have obtained from an original set of hammers from a similar 7’2” Steinway grand, and this piano has become a responsive instrument. It is an excellent and rare example of the intention of the builder. The restoration of this piano provides the basis for the class to be taught at the Piano Technicians Guild Convention in 2021 in Orlando, Florida. |
