In the early 19th century the piano was a domestic musical instrument, and became increasingly important in the family, both as a means for keeping the young ladies occupied with worthwhile activity and as a symbol of upward mobility.  Many different types or styles of pianofortes were built - square, grand, diagonal grand and finally, vertical.  As the piano was rapidly changing in its design, the home piano revealed many technological innovations;  as the piano became a symbol of status, the cabinets were sometimes more fancy, too.  Pianos from France, Germany, England and the United States are represented in this exhibit.
