This Chickering flat-strung concert grand with first-generation Brown action was used shortly after acquisition in a concert of the music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk with pianist Frank French in November 2016. It has the power of any modern instrument, belying traditional assumptions. The recently unveiled “Barenboim/Maene modern flatstrung concert grand may actually be closer to this Chickering piano than any other flat-strung instrument. Steinway had ended its flat-strung grand manufacture over 10 years before Chickering. Unlike Steinway, Chickering’s flat strung pianos used modern string scaling and a fairly modern, well-crowned soundboard.
